What You'll Do Reporting to the Journeyperson Powerline Technician, the role of Powerline Technician Apprentice is to install new and maintain low and high voltage equipment in a substation. Under this role the PLT Apprentice will gain hands-on experience with the installation of ground grids, structural steel’s erection and the repair and assembly of power system equipment. The PLT Apprentice is responsible to assist with the installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of high voltage transformers and all other related equipment on a substation Key Responsibilities • Erect and maintain steel, wood or concrete poles, towers and guy wires; • Install, maintain and repair overhead and underground powerlines and cables, insulators, conductors, lightning arrestors, switches, transformers, street lighting and other associated equipment; • Work with various types of heavy equipment including Ariel booms, diggers, backhoes, track hoes, nod wells, tension stringing equipment, and skid steers; • Splice, solder and insulate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution and transmission networks; • Use of wiring diagrams, voltage indicating devices, and other electrical-testing instruments to identify defective automatic sectionalizing devices, circuit breakers, fuses, voltage regulators, transformers, switches, relays, or wiring; • Work in a fast-paced outdoor environment, in various weather conditions, including digging, lifting, and moving equipment and material; and • Safely operate and maintain powerlines that may be de-energized and grounded or may remain energized – use of live-line maintenance techniques on energized power line. Additional Information As a condition of employment, candidates will be required to complete pre-employment screening including professional reference checks and a criminal record check. What We're Looking For • Registered apprentice, or an Alberta-certified journeyperson, hold a valid and recognized credential • Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and at variety of different heights • Must be able to work various shift including weekends and afterhours, which may include travelling to various sites • Must be able to use proper lifting techniques to work with and lift equipment weighing in excess of 55lbs • Must have ability to work as a member of a team and adapt to changing tasks and locations • Must have class 5 Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record • Must be able to understand and read English • Valid CSTS certification (Construction Safety Training System) preferred and other industry-related safety training certificates such as First Aid, Fall Protection, etc. • Successful completion of Alcohol & Drug testing is a requirement for this position Tool Requirements • Tool Box • 1/2 drive socket set • Sockets up to 15/16" • Metric Socket set - up to 22mm • Metric tape measure • Standard wrenches up to 1-1/4" • Metric wrenches up to 21mm • Insulated screwdriver set • Nut driver set • Screwdriver set • Crescent wrenches  12" & 18" • Linesmen Pliers • Channel lock pliers • Side cutters • Crimping tool • Needle nose pliers • Allen keys up to 1/2" • Stripping knife • Mechanical wire strippers • Mallet hammer/Ballpoint hammer • Vise grips • Multimeter (Within 3 months) * 50% reimbursed by RET after 6 months • Center punch • Torx bits set • Hacksaw • Metal Files • Driver bits (Robertson, Philips, 5/16' etc.)
